Justice, Parodi (ANM) in Nordio: "Defending the values you believe in justifies any risk."

"I respect the minister's opinion, but I believe that defending one's values justifies any kind of risk in the name of safeguarding citizens." With these words, Cesare Parodi, president of the National Association of Magistrates (ANM) , interviewed by Affaritaliani , responded to the words of Justice Minister Carlo Nordio , according to whom "magistrates risk humiliation with the referendum (on the constitutional reform of the justice system promoted by the center-right government, ed.)."
"The referendum mechanism allows us to open a dialogue with citizens, the true beneficiaries of the reform, which perhaps awaits different, concrete, and immediate measures. And we appeal to everyone, voters of all parties, because we believe that in theory everyone could share our opinions. Mistakes are made by those who see us as politically biased or oppositional . If that were the case, we would be here. This must not become a referendum for or against the government or the judiciary, but on whether or not we share values. Which is perhaps more important," concludes ANM President Parodi.
MINISTER NORDIO'S WORDS - "Magistrates risk humiliation with the referendum" - "I'm afraid of winning the referendum, after a bloody debate involving the judiciary. Because if it were to fall in line with politics, or worse, lead the charge, a defeat would be a humiliation that would affect its credibility, which has already plummeted. And as a citizen and a magistrate, I don't hope for that. Justice is the blood and tears of the people; it cannot be exploited for electoral gain." This was stated by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio in an interview with the newspaper "La Repubblica." For the government representative, "the reform is the logical consequence of the Code promoted by Vassalli, a hero of the Resistance, and the debate should be kept rational. But the adjectives used by the opposition, and even by some of the judiciary, have been so aggressive as to make a discussion difficult. The law reaffirms the absolute independence of the prosecuting and adjudicating judiciary: just read the text. This reform was desired by the citizens who voted for us. Anything else is a trial of intentions, or rather, empty and inconsistent controversy."
